Madeira   -   Rabacal

Saturday - sixth day - was entry to independent traveling. We rent a car for remaining three days in Budget. At first it was Hyundai Atos (28Eu/day komplet) but later we changed to Renault Clio (35Eu daily). For additional 10 Euro we are allowed to left car at the airport. After breakfast (with romantic sunrise of course :-) we're driving in direction Ribeira Brava to reach familiar Encumeada pass. Than continue through high plateau Paúl da Serra at elevation 1500m.

It is unusualy flat for Madeira. Countryside is completely different from other places on island (a-lá Scotland). It's windy here so a lot of wind power stations.

We're leaving the main road to dive into valley by narrow asphalt road toward place called Rabacal.

It is popular walking place with three levadas in different levels. You have to turn back at each levada. It's a little labyrinth. Without levada guidebook it's hard to get oriented.

First Levada do Risco is ended by the big waterfall. Don't go more further. It's very slippery. You have to turn back and by stairs downhill to the "lower level"... like in some "real" arcade computer game.

Second levada called 25 Fontes ends with a nice pool with small waterfalls (but not 25 :-(.

Again we're turning back to place where easy-to-overlook path branches right downhill on a ridge to another "level" - levada Agua do Vimiero. Again 40 minutes by the "blind" levada. There are wonderfull views around. Levada even cross small gorge inside concrete bridge!

After "mission complete" we're coming back to place where we meet levada and continue to another valley with steps to "higher level" levada and huge 800 meter long tunnel.

Equipped by headlights me and Petra are penetrating tunnel to opposite side of the mountains and back. Vlada voluntered for logistic base at the car and was waiting for us.

The path inside the tunnel was wide and O.K. Nevertheless it was a bit adventurous.
