Accomodation
It was source of surprisingly good experiencies and also horrible ones.
Beside state-owned hotels (higher prices but some "stable" standard) there exists a lot of smaller
private hotels from super clean to real shitholes. For whom who has enough cash is in every bigger
city a nice hotel with very good level but with price around 25-50USD per night.
In emergency we used once a state run hotel in Gondar for 45B/per. In Ethiopia there is one significant
problem. The most of the hotel rooms are single with wider beds. It brings us difficulties because we
were three males.
In private hotels it is worth to bargin. We didnt make it but other backpackers had
good results. Toilets are somewhere "turkish" holes in the ground but mostly classical french water toilets.
Room prices varied from 10B-30B with common shower to 20-60B with shower.
Some "tips" which we checked:
ADIS ABABA - our first night was in BARO HOTEL (90B/room incl. WC/shower), expensive, a little bit dirty.
WUTMA is "classic", very nice, clean, 53B/single with WC/shower. PARK HOTEL (on a paralel street
right from Wutma a Baro), we spent two nights there, helpful and friendly personel, (3 bed room, common
showers 60B ).
BAHIR DAR - the winner is TANA PAESTRY, room for 20B, hot shower. Good deal is also campsite
in Ghion Hotel, nice surroundings in hotel garden on lake Tana coast. 25-40B for tent according your
negociation skills.
GONDAR - tip, new, spotless clean BELEGEZ PENZION, beautiful rooms in rustical style, unfortunatelly just
singles for 50B common/60B private shower. In Gondar is hard to recommend other hotel. State QUERA
rather expensive, ETHIOPIA on square very cheap (25B/ 2 bed room), colonial style, but the rest is just
horrible (including rat in bed, flies and awfull toilets).
